American Catholics Today: New Realities of Their Faith and Their Church List Price: $73.00 Sale Price: $59.90 Used From: $49.00 |
|
The Catholic Church has had a tumultuous recent history, in the wake of the election of a new pope and sex abuse scandals, and the views of Catholic lay people have not stood untouched. What are the effects of these events upon Catholics' beliefs? How do beliefs of older and younger generations of Catholics differ? Using key Gallup surveys from 1987 to 2005, this book reveals a rift between Catholics born before and after Vatican II and suggests that the future will find more Catholics making decisions about their own faith and fewer who are fervently committed to church life... |
Are most Mexican-American immigrants Catholic?
I wonder since the news today that Islam has replaced Catholicism as the world's largest religion...

Mexican-American immigrants are Catholic because Mexico is a majority-Catholic country. They retain their religion when they move, just like the Irish and Germans did 100 years ago.

The Belief of Catholics $14.95 Ronald Knox was one of the most influential British convert-writers of the 20th century. Of his many works, The Belief of Catholics is his best-known book and his premiere piece of apologetics. While it deals extensively with Protestantism, its target is more the unchurched or lightly-church modern who, if he gives any thought at all to Catholicism, thinks it mildly foreign. As Knox knew, it is not the most difficult part of modern apologetics to convince the devoted Protestant that he has much of Christian truth but now needs to move on to the rest, which is found only in the Catholic Church. The most difficult part is convincing the nominal Protestant (or nominal Catholic), the vaguely religious person, or the person without any religious inclinations that God really does exist, that His existence matters, and that only knowledge of Him and obedience to Him can lead to answers to the questions that haunt everyone. Knox discusses "the truths Catholics hold", "the rules Catholics acknowledge", "the strength Catholics receive", and "the ambitions Catholics honour". These truths, rules, strengths, and ambitions were attractive to the book's first readers. They were answers to the ever-present "Why?". These answers will prove equally attractive to today's readers who, after so many decades of failed isms, yearn for understanding and commitment even more than did their grandparents' generation. ' |

Will Catholics Be Left Behind? $17.95 This powerful and timely book, written by a former Fundamentalist, is a thorough critique of the popular Fundamentalist notion of the ???Rapture???"the belief that Christians will be removed from earth prior to a time of Tribulation and the Second Coming. It examines the theological, historical, and Biblical basis for ???premillennial dispensationalism???, the belief system based around the Rapture, and popularized in the best-selling Left Behind books and taught by ???Bible prophecy??? writers Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, and many others. Written for both the lay person and the serious student, this book combines an engaging, popular approach with detailed footnotes and exhaustive research. Beginning with the big picture, it focuses first on key concepts such as eschatology, the Parousia, and the relationship between the Kingdom and the Church. It then examines the Book of Revelation, providing insights into the nature and purpose of that difficult, final book of the Bible. Another chapter looks at the concept of the ???millennium??? and how it has been understood by various Christians over the centuries. Olson then shows how Left Behind creator LaHaye's many works on ???Bible prophecy??? are filled with attacks on Catholicism, and often rely on sensationalism, shaky scholarship, and subjective interpretations of Scripture Olson, a former dispensationalist who now edits Envoy magazine, also presents a history of apocalyptic belief and theology, beginning with the Early Church Fathers and including the Montanists, St. Augustine, Joachim of Fiore, the Protestant Reformers, and the American Puritans. He shows how John Nelson Darby, an ex-Anglican priest, developed the premillennial dispensationalist system, which hinges on the Rapture, in the 1830s and how Darby relied upon faulty assumptions about Jesus Christ, the Church, and the Bible. The second part of the book, ???A Catholic Critique of Dispensationalism,??? focuses on three important topics: the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the Kingdom; the interpretation of Scripture; and the nature of the Rapture event. Filled with a wealth of information drawn from both Protestant and Catholic sources, this section provides a complete rebuttal to the premillennial dispensationalist system and the ???left behind??? theology. The book concludes with a reflection on the Catholic understanding of the end times, salvation history, and the final judgement. Glossaries of key persons and terms are also included. A strong, but fair, critique of a dangerous and popular belief, Will Catholics Be ???Left Behind???? provides Catholics and Protestants, lay people and clergy, and students and scholars with important answers and information about the roots and meaning of the ???Rapture???. ???Millions of Americans believe the Lord will snatch them up any day now, leaving the rest of us to the horrors of a seven-year tribulation. The hitch is that the *Rapture' has no pedi |

American Babylon $26.95 Christians are by their nature a people out of place. Their true home is with God; in civic life, they are alien citizens ???in but not'of the world.??? In American Babylon , eminent theologian Richard John Neuhaus examines the particular truth of that ambiguity for Catholics in America today. Neuhaus addresses the essential quandaries of Catholic life"assessing how Catholics can keep their heads above water in the sea of immorality that confronts them in the'world, how they can be patriotic even though their true country is not in this world, and how they might reconcile their duties as citizens with their commitment to God. Deeply learned, frequently combative, and always eloquent, American Babylon is Neuhaus's magnum opus"and will be essential reading for all Christians. |

The American Catholic Voter $29.95 From the earliest days in the New World through the presidential election of 2000, the influence of Catholics on American politics has followed a peculiar arc. In Colonial America, Catholics were often denied participation in the process; but in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Catholic bloc was recognized as a swing vote that determined the outcome of numerous elections; and today Catholics are either so assimilated or disunited that as a group their impact is declining. ' George J. Marlin traces the political and electoral history of American Catholics from the time of Lord Baltimore and the founding of Maryland to the election of George W. Bush. It is an inspiring story of ethnic Catholics who arrived on America's shores with only the clothes on their back, worked through their parishes and neighborhoods to overcome nativist bigotry, and became a significant voice in local, state, and national political affairs.' '"Nobody knows more about the history of Catholic voters than George Marlin. His book is always informative and sometimes a downright revelation. The American Catholic Voter is certain to be an'instant classic. '" Brad Miner, 'Author, The Compleat Gentleman: The Modern Man's Guide to Chivalry |
