What does the Bible say about tobacco use?
I know tobacco wasn't discovered until the 16th or 17th Century when Spanish explorers brought it back to Europe from the Americas. Therefore, there is no mention of it in the Bible. But wouldn't smoking fall under "unclean spirits"? The Bible also says your body is a temple (I'm para-quoting), so wouldn't smoking be defiling your temple? The man who asked Jesus how to get to heaven was named Nicodemus too, and Jesus told him that he must be born again to see heaven. Nicodemus = nicotine. Therefore one must purge themselves of all filth and be made pure before they can see heaven.
Of course, the Bible doesn't mention tobacco directly, but neither does it mention guns directly, and that obviously doesn't mean that it is all right to murder someone with a gun because the Bible doesn't condemn guns.
The Bible does give general principles that apply to a lot of things. One is, "Therefore, since we have these promises, beloved ones, let us cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in God’s fear." (2 Corinthians 7:1) The dictionary says that "defilement" means pollution, filth, etc. It is well known now how tobacco pollutes the body, causing many kinds of cancer. Chewing tobacco gets spit and is really nasty.
But even more important is the second part, "defilement ... of spirit..." Nicotene is an addictive drug, listed in drug reference books. And the Bible, in Revelation 21:8, where the Bible condemns "those practicing spiritism" ("sorcerers" in some Bibles), the original Greek word for "sorcerers" was "pharmakia", or, literally, "druggers", since these people apparently used drugs in what they did. So the Bible actually says that "druggers" will end up in the lake of fire, which, it says, means "the second death" with no hope of coming back.
So for two reasons, tobacco's being a "defilement of flesh and spirit," and its being a drug addiction, the Bible shows that anyone wanting everlasting life will need to avoid it.
Best regards,
Mike
