Jehovah's Witnesses have always acknowledged that the Bible itself uses a single name for Almighty God, expressed in Hebrew as "יהוה" and transliterated into our alphabet as "YHWH". Because that Divine Name is four letters in Hebrew, Latin, and English, scholars refer to it as "the Tetragrammaton".

Jehovah's Witnesses infer that the Divine Author of the Bible accepts respectful forms of that original Hebrew name because the Bible itself includes a derivative of that Name (יה or "YH" or "Yeh" or "Yah" or "Jah"). Thus, a sincere desire to honor the Creator by the use the Divine Name persuades Jehovah's Witnesses to accept literally any respectful form of the Divine Name, and to encourage continued use of the Name by Christians and other Bible readers.

Of course, the Tetragrammaton is typically pronounced "Jehovah" in English, but Jehovah's Witnesses do not insist that other respectful pronunciations (such as Yahweh or Yehowah) must be abandoned. Unsurprisingly, as the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses have been translated into some four hundred languages, dozens of different respectful forms of the Divine Name have been formalized that fit the lingual tendencies and alphabets of these languages.

Alongside these respectful modern translations of "יהוה" ("YHWH"), Jehovah's Witnesses have noted evidence that the ancient Greek Ἰαῶ (Romanized into "IAO") seems to have been used as a respectful form of the Divine Name many centuries ago. There is evidence that even before Christ certain translations of the Hebrew Scriptures into the Greek language occasionally used the Greek name "IAO" to translate the Hebrew name "YHWH". In particular, such evidence is found in Greek translations of these two verses.

"Hallelu-jah" or "Praise Jah [Jehovah]"
