King James Version....isn't it a modern version?

The last of the canon of the Bible was written by the Apostle John before the year 100. Why then do so many claim that ONLY the KJV is worthy of consideration when it was not completed until the 17th century and nearly 90% of it was taken from Tyndale's translation from the previous century. : “Tindale’s honesty, sincerity, and scrupulous integrity, his simple directness, his magical simplicity of phrase, his modest music, have given an authority to his wording that has imposed itself on all later versions. . . . Nine-tenths of the Authorized New Testament [King James Version] is still Tindale, and the best is still his.”—The Bible in Its Ancient and English Versions, page 160.
Tyndale was also responsible for introducing God’s personal name, Jehovah, into the English Bible. As writer J. F. Mozley observes, Tyndale used it “more than twenty times in his Old Testament” translations.

1) King James Version....isn't it a modern version?

In the sense that it is written in modern English, yes. In the sense that, out of 1600 years of the existence of the bible, it was produced after 1200 years of bible - that is, it has existed for about 25% of the entire time of the bible - "modern" is probably too generous, and "dated" or "traditional" or "classic" would be better terms.

2) Why then do so many claim that ONLY the KJV is worthy of consideration when it was not completed until the 17th century and nearly 90% of it was taken from Tyndale's translation from the previous century.

OK, there are 2 issues here. First, the King James Version (KJV) *cannot* be "90%" Tyndale, as Tyndale never came close to completing 90% of the bible. It may be that those sections which Tyndale completed make up 90% of the corresponding sections of the KJV text - but that is a *very* different thing.

Second, the KJV-only-ists. This appears to be a simple case of tradition combined with Anglocentrism. For roughly 250 years the KJV was the *only* English Protestant bible widely available, and certainly the best English bible available. For English-speaking Protestants who spoke of "the bible", there was only 1 bible which they considered: the KJV. It was "the bible" of their parents, their grandparents, etc. It was, in fact, the only bible most of them had ever known or even heard of. A tradition that well-founded - especially when integrated into someone's religion - takes a long time to be uprooted.

3) Tyndale was also responsible for introducing God’s personal name, Jehovah, into the English Bible.

I had never heard this - though "Jehovah", a word known to be derived through error, a word not existing in the original languages, perhaps should not be claimed to be "God's personal name".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah#History

As you can see from the above, word first appears in 1278, and the *pronunciation* "Jehovah" first appears in 1518. It does appear that Tyndale was responsible for the introduction of this erroneous transliteration into Protestant English bibles - good point! (No attempt at transliteration of the tetragrammaton seems to appear in either the Wyclif bible or the Latin Vulgate).
