Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition)The Scofield Reference Bible is a widely circulated study Bible edited and annotated by the American Bible student Cyrus I. Scofield, that popularized dispensationalism at the beginning of the 20th century... |
Why is the Scofield Study Bible so loved by some and so disliked by others?
The Scofield Bible was very popular in the last century. For over 100 years it was used in Bible seminaries across the United States. It introduced an easy to accept "doctrine", and comforted fears people had about the era leading to God's return. Millions began to confuse the commentary that accompanied the scripture, with the actual scriptures themselves. Because this version was popular, and disseminated throughout many Bible colleges, it began to shape the thinking of many sectors of Christianity, as well as some Messianic Jewish Believers, however untrue Scofield's commentary was.
Isaac Newton, along with other famous, former-era Bible scholars, did not make the mistake of mis-interpreting the "twinkling of an eye" reference to mean that we would be whooshed away. He was aware that the "twinkling of an eye" reference in I Corinthians 15:52 referred to the manner and speed which mortal bodies of Believers would be changed into spiritual, immortal bodies, upon the Lord's Return.
Scofield was influenced by a Scottish group called the Irvingites in the 1800's. There was a great spiritual revival in Scotland during that era. The Irvingites were a group that practiced meeting in houses, rather than an actual church buildings. During one house-church meeting a young girl had a vision that Believers in Messiah would be whisked up into the air upon Christ's Return, without their having to endure any suffering during the "Time of Trouble", which immediately precedes His Return. Her vision evolved into what is called the "Rapture Doctrine" now made famous by the hugely popular "Left Behind" book series.
Those who dislike the Scofield Bible do so for valid reasons. As I mentioned previously, it fooled millions of people into thinking that one man's ideas were actual fact. Secondly, it has set up false expectations on the part of Believers who expect to be whisked away before any troubling Earth re-birth pangs occur, before Messiah's return to Restore All Things.
Throughout millenia millions have suffered and lost their lives for their faith. It is unrealistic to expect to be whisked off the earth before "The Alpha And Omega" comes to bring Peace to Earth. Particularly American Christians, with their fast food, fast-fix cultural mentality, fall prey to these unrealistic expectations. Personally, I am deeply saddened that the Scofield Bible may be the cause for billions of Believers' disappointment by false hope, who may not have the strength to hold out to the Very End, when The "I Am", (as He addressed Himself to Moses), returns.
