doesn't Christianity thrive in capitalist societies more than other societies?
Christianity in America is larger than life. i mean mega churches, Christian universities, multi millionaire pastors and preachers driving expensive cars, wearing expensive designer suits and traveling on private jets, living in mansions and owning vacation homes in Europe and other parts of the world. and all of this comes from the generous Christian tithers, many of whom may be in debt up to their noses to credit card companies. but it doesn't matter, it's all good. the bible says we should pay tithe and that's what we'll do. we trust our Godly pastors and preachers. they are good people. they can quote scripture about the Lord!
mean while people are dying from hunger and disease.

You analysis is very good. Capitalism is certainly a place where Christianity, in the sense it is today, can thrive. Communism has not historically been friendly to Christianity, or any religion, as I am sure you could see from past communist empires. However, I am not sure I would prefer that. It would be best to be in a society where everyone is equal, and yet in this equality each may have his own views, organized or not, on this life and the afterlife, or just this life. It doesn't matter.
However, it seems that organized religion just loves to back-stab its followers and ideals, preferring money and power to what they preach every day. All organized religion seems this way. It always wants to distort the original beliefs with fake ones, so it can manipulate its following and gain more power. Look at Islam. Jihad is a completely false concept in the original religious texts. Islam originally preached for acceptance of other religions. Why not anymore? Because power is better than kindness in the eyes of the Neo-Muslim terrorist.
And Christianity seems tending towards this, like it was in the past. The Crusades were never for the Christian God, they were for the Byzantine emperor who wanted back Asia Minor. If there's another Crusade, and you might be able to interpret the "War on Terror" as a pseudo-Crusade, not publicly for Christianity, but rather for the Western Society that is Christianity's aftermath, then it will also not be for any God that is truly benevolent.
I share your apparent disdain for preachers who talk about helping the hungry and then go on a vacation to their expensive Hawaiian vacation home. Why don't they give more of their money to poor, hungry people, like they say we all should? Because the people who actually do, the preachers who follow their sermons, are not rich enough to afford making giant mega-duplex warehouses to preach in. They're the churches on the corner that don't have big, fancy auditoriums. Too bad all churches weren't like they used to be. America, and the world, would be a much better place.
