what is this secret in my ancient crucifix?
My grandfather's family were antique dealers and collectors for generations and I have inherited many fine pieces from his collection. One of which is a elaborately carved and inlaid crucifix about 1 meter (3 feet) long that my grandfather believed was at least 400 years old. last year when cleaning it I discovered one inlay at the rear was actually a button that released a hidden panel just below Christ's feet. Inside was a sealed glass vial containing a dark liquid. The vial looks very old as the glass is opalescent like ancient Roman glass. There is a symbol on the vial in gold leaf which looks like a large upturned V over a smaller o. Inlaid inside the container under the vial is an inlaid symbol that looks like a sun with rays with an eye in the center.
The crucifix is obviously catholic so I have asked several catholic historians as to what is in the vial and what the symbols mean but so far have drawn a blank, any ideas?
