Catholic Commentary

Do we need theologians to interpret the Bible for us?

I thought that Protestants left the Catholic church to avoid the traditions of men, but we still rely on clergy to interpret the Bible for us. What's up with that? Some of the theology that I've heard is too convoluted for me to believe. When we come across a difficult verse like "Faith without works is dead" we rely on theologians to tell us that it isn't true.
How many of you don't know what Calvinism is but still think they have a good grip on the message of the Bible? Do you have to look at a commentary to find out what it didn't really mean?

Calvin was not a theologian but a lawyer. He had very little training or skills in theology. He was really a secular Humanist who led the movement to blend Christianity with secular Humanism to create a syncretic theocracy in Geneva where he was known as the butcher of Geneva for his harsh treatment of anyone who disagreed with his absolute power.

The scholarship of real theologians has given us as Christians a greater understanding of our relationship with our creator. There have been many great doctors of the Church who were obviously inspired with great minds. The greats were St. Irenaeus, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine and St. Aquinas to name a few. God bless!
