Illiteracy & Bibliolatry
Illiteracy isto the inability of an individual to use reading, writing, and computational skills efficiently in everyday life situations: the inability to read or write simple sentences in any language. Bibliolatry is the worship of the Bible. The word is a combination of the Greek words "biblion" (book) and "latria" (worship), and though it may also refer to an extreme devotion to books in general, it is more often used as a derogatory reference to making the Bible an idol rather than a "pointer".
Most religions have a sacred book. For Christians it is the Bible and the Bible is sacred to me as a member of the Christian community.
That said, I do not elevate the Bible to some sort of infallible and inerrant work as many Christian denominations do. I use the word "pointer" because that's what we read the Gospel of John quoting as he quotes Jesus as saying, "You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me" (John 5:39).
Christianity more than any other religion is one bound to and tied to a book. In fact, the early Christians were known as the "people of the book".
All religions are a matter of faith to one degree or another, but as Romans 10:17 says, "Faith coming by HEARING" not reading. Hearing what? Hearing the SPIRIT! If salvation comes by reading the word, then those who cannot read are doomed! Some 2,000 years ago most people didn't read and if they could they probably couldn't afford to even own a Bible, if they were even available.
The Bible (which translation exactly?) is our sacred book. It is filled with wisdom; however, may we not make it an idol and cling to doctrines of man because as Mark tells us in chapter 7, such acts and doctrines make even the word which we read useless. Worst of all is when we use the book and a hammer to beat people over the head thinking that such action is what a God of love would do.
No way, no how!
Bottom line. Be thankful we have the Bible. Use it waith care and compassion. Study to show yourself a workman unashamed. But, keep in mind that God doesn't need a Bible to speak to us, nor do we need to know how to read. In fact for centuries that ws what the Catholic priests preferred. When I see how some people pervert the Bible for their own religious agendas, I too can see how the priests came to such a position.
God is LOVE.
And, God is SPIRIT!
