Catholic History
can somebody give me a brief history on why the catholic church has a pope?
i know it was not always like this and i have heard that the greek catholics did not approve of the idea of a leader to all the bishops so they were not apart of the roman catholics
can somebody give me a brief history about this?
<
Jesus instituted the "office" of the papacy, as well as the priesthood in general via Apostolic Succession. The first pope was Saint Peter, and the lineage continues today with pope benedict XVI.
<>
The Eastern Orthodox Churches were in Full Communion with Rome and the Papacy until 1054. Even today, while the Eastern Churches only recognize the first seven Ecumentical Councils, and reject papal Authority, they are still in "Certain Communion" with the Church.
<
1054 years is a long time. 2000 is even longer. Might I recommend the book, "Triumph: The Power and Glory of the Catholic Church: a 2,000 year history.", by H.W. Crocker III.

The Courage to Be Catholic $15.95 Bestselling author George Weigel (Witness to Hope: A Biography of John Paul II) argues that the path to genuine Catholic reform does not lie in accommodating the truth to the spirit of the age, but in a renewed commitment to living the fullness of the Catholic faith. Weigel situates the current crisis of sexual abuse and episcopal malfeasance in the context of recent Catholic history. With unflinching honesty, he analyzes the Church's failure to embrace the great spiritual promise of Vatican II, resulting in the steady surrender to liberal culture. Weigel exposes the patterns of dissent entrenched in seminaries, among priests, and the bishops who failed their flocks. He then gives a solid agenda for true reform and holiness. |

The Catholic as Historian $24.95 Edited by Donald J. D'Elia & Patrick Foley When historians adhere to a Christian worldview, should that worldview have an influence on their understanding of the history that they write about? ' Yet, it is not possible to achieve a "neutral" historigraphy, since every historian brings to the study of the words and deeds of the past a certain framework as to what kinds of meaning are possible. This collection of studies by eminent Catholic historians moves the discussion to a new level. |

Letters to a Young Catholic $14.95 'In this remarkable tour of the Catholic world, George Weigel helps us understand how Catholicism fosters what Flannery O'Connor called ???the habit of being.??? Taking the reader by the hand, Weigel embarks on a journey to Catholic landmarks as diverse as Chartres Cathedral and St. Mary's Church in Greenville, South Carolina; the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and G.K. Chesterton's favorite pub. Weaving together insights from history, literature, theology, and music, Weigel uses these touchstones to illuminate the beliefs that have shaped Catholicism for two thousand years. ' With clarity and conviction, Weigel examines the foundations of Catholic faith and explores the topics of grace, prayer, vocation, sin and forgiveness, suffering, and"most importantly"love. Putting a dramatic face on this invitation to Catholicism, Weigel introduces some of the figures who have shaped his faith and thought.' In these letters, George Weigel conveys the power of a faith that is at once personal and universal, timely and eternal. His book will inspire not only the young generation of Catholics but also the faithful, the doubtful, and the searchers of every age.' 'George Weigel is a Catholic theologian, a leading commentator on religion and public life, and the best-selling author of The Courage to be Catholic and Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II .' |

Daily Readings in Catholic Classics $17.95 "Don't read good books"read the best books," is what a nun taught Fr. Rawley Myers as a youth. Thus, he has gathered together in this very unique volume a reading for each day of the year from some of the greatest Catholic books and writers in Church history, many in this century. Myers taps into the rich treasury of outstanding Catholic literature, often neglected in today's busy world, and he provides a wonderful selection of thoughts and meditations that are both intellectually stimulating and spiritually rewarding.'' Drawing on the writings of thirty-four famous Catholic authors, this book ranges from the thoughts of Doctors of the Church like Saint Augustine, Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint Thomas Aquinas, to classic authors like Saint Francis de Sales, Thomas ' Kempis, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, to popular 20th century spiritual guides like Bishop Fulton Sheen, Thomas Merton and Romano Guardini and, finally, the writings of a group of famous modern converts like G. K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Ronald Knox and John Henry Newman. They enlighten our minds, inflame our hearts and strengthen our souls with selections that are easily digestible and whet the appetite for more of the impressive heritage of Catholic theological and philosophical reflection. '' "Fr. Myers has done American Catholics a great service in making available to them this anthology of some of the finest thinkers in the history of the Church. The format is ideal for personal reading and meditation, group reflection, or even as a way of beginning a day in a Catholic high school or college." " Fr. Peter Stravinskas , Editor, The Catholic Answer '' "Fr. Myers has put together a book of selections from the best authors there are. It seems that the world hates the Church that Jesus founded, just as He said it would (John 15:18). It reviles her doctrines, mocks her moral teachings and invents lies about her history. In every age, but especially in our modern day, historians and political powers have distorted the facts about her past (or just made up novel falsehoods from scratch) to make the Church, and the civilization it fostered, seem corrupt, backward, or simply evil... |
