Catholic Holy Cards
What blessed objects are kept on Vietnamese Catholic home altars and how do they function?
I am looking for some information on Vietnamese Catholic home altars including Holy Family altars, Marian altars, patron saint altars,
and ancestor altars. Pictures would be awesome! What is the significance of the altars and the statues, holy cards, etc.? Are certain devotional practices held in the home with the altars as a focal point? Where are the altars located in the home and what happens to blessed objects when they are broken, old or worn-- are they thrown away?
It so totally depends on whose altar it is! Generally, different foods, statues, cigarettes or cigars, beer or other spirits...
Really, it depends on to whom the altar is placed or who is being prayed for...
I'm pretty sure they would never be thrown away! You must realise that, since Catholics believe in "pergatory", they will pray a lifetime for anyone who has dies, esp. "before their time" My sisters died early (age 33 days and 5 years, respectively)... my mother and father still have masses said for them. RE; throwing anything away, NO, you never do. You can burn what has been replaced, on the altar and keep the ashes there.. just do not ever toss it. Prayer cards are mass cards or burial cards... they should be the focal point per altar.

One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic $16.95 Very often in the history of Christianity, "reformers", by whatever name, have aspired to return to "the early Church". The Church of their own day, for whatever reason, fails to live up to what they think Christianity should be: in their view there has been a falling away from the beautiful ideals of the early Church. Kenneth Whitehead shows in this book how the early Church has, in fact, not disappeared, but rather has survived and persisted, and is with us still. "Reformers" are not so much the ones needed by this Church as are those who aspire to be saints"to follow Christ seriously and always to fulfill God's holy will by employing the means of sanctification which Christ continues to provide in the Church. Whitehead shows how the visible body which today bears the name "the Catholic Church" is the same Church which Christ established to carry on and perpetuate in the world his Words and his Works"and his own divine Life"and to bring salvation and sanctification to all mankind. Despite superficial differences in certain appearances, the worldwide Catholic Church today remains the same Church that was originally founded by Jesus Christ on Peter and the other apostles back in the first century in the ancient Near East. The early Church, in other words, was always!"nothing else but"the Catholic Church. |

Letters to a Young Catholic $14.95 'In this remarkable tour of the Catholic world, George Weigel helps us understand how Catholicism fosters what Flannery O'Connor called ???the habit of being.??? Taking the reader by the hand, Weigel embarks on a journey to Catholic landmarks as diverse as Chartres Cathedral and St. Mary's Church in Greenville, South Carolina; the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and G.K. Chesterton's favorite pub. Weaving together insights from history, literature, theology, and music, Weigel uses these touchstones to illuminate the beliefs that have shaped Catholicism for two thousand years. ' With clarity and conviction, Weigel examines the foundations of Catholic faith and explores the topics of grace, prayer, vocation, sin and forgiveness, suffering, and"most importantly"love. Putting a dramatic face on this invitation to Catholicism, Weigel introduces some of the figures who have shaped his faith and thought.' In these letters, George Weigel conveys the power of a faith that is at once personal and universal, timely and eternal. His book will inspire not only the young generation of Catholics but also the faithful, the doubtful, and the searchers of every age.' 'George Weigel is a Catholic theologian, a leading commentator on religion and public life, and the best-selling author of The Courage to be Catholic and Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II .' |

Classic Catholic Converts $14.95 Classic Catholic Converts presents the compelling stories of over 25 well-known converts to Catholicism from the 19th and 20th centuries. It tells of powerful testimonials to God's grace, men and women from all walks of life in Europe and America whose search for the fullness of truth led them to the Catholic Church. It is the witness of brilliant intellectuals, social workers, scientists, authors, film producers, clergy, businessmen, artists and others who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, studied and prayed their way into the Church. Fr. Charles Connor writes insightful and wonderfully readable stories of a rich variety of converts who struggled greatly with many challenges as they embraced Catholicism, including rejection by loved ones, persecution from strangers, and misunderstanding by peers. But, once they responded to God's call, they experienced great inner peace, contentment and joy. Among the famous converts whose stories are told here include John Henry Newman, Edith Stein, Jacques Maritain, Dorothy Day, G.K. Chesterton, Elizabeth Seton, Karl Stern, Ronald Knox and many more. "A great gift at a moment of history when conversions to the Catholic Church are receiving renewed attention. Marvelously readable stories highlight the vivid diversity of the personalities and the unity of the truth that still brings restless souls into full communion with the Church of Jesus Christ." "Rev. Richard John Neuhaus Editor, First Things "This fine parade of men and women, described with insight by Father Connor, shows how long is the reach of the Holy Spirit and how varied are the personalities He has gathered to Himself." "Rev. George W. Rutler Author , A Crisis of Saints "The touching conversion stories that Fr. Connor so concisely presents convey the joys as well as the struggles that converts continue to experience on their journey into the Catholic Church." "Marcus C. Grodi President, The Coming Home Network "This book reminds 'cradle Catholics' of the pearl of great price that is ours and should motivate many of us to a sharper sense of evangelization as the new Millennium begins. Rich information and valuable insights abound-highly recommended!" "Most Reverend Edwin F. O'Brien Archbishop for the Military Services Fr. Charles Connor , a pastor of a parish in the diocese of Scranton, PA, is an expert in Church history. He is the host of several television series on EWTN including Historic Catholic Converts. |
