Regarding the Catholic Latin Mass, what is so special about it that it is being brought back into the?

public Celebration? Why was it celebrated in Latin for so long?

Yes, I have attended a few with a friend. And I've been curious for years. Enlighten me?
Crusader, what is so "pure" about doing the Mass in a language most people don't understand? Is that it moves it beyond the reach of the ordinary person?
Y Toaster, are you saying that there is danger that the English Mass will be corrupted because of language changes?
Thank you, Shadow. We've moved a long way from the way Christ set it up. I wonder how He'd feel about feeding His sheep in a language they don't understand?
btw, I'm not of the Catholic denomination. I just have many friends that are. They can't answer my questions. lol! I appreciate you all helping!

The reason the Mass was celebrated in Latin for so long is that Latin was the universal language of the mediaeval Catholic civilisation of Europe. Even after the reformation it remained the common language of educated Europeans - e.g. the Protestant dictator Cromwell would talk to his foreign ambassadors in Latin. For a trans-national organisation such as the Catholic Church it was the obvious vehicle for ensuring uniformity of worship, and avoiding the danger that the universal Church might fragment into its various national components. Presumably this also made it easier for the Vatican to maintain control over the far-flung outposts of the Church.

As for the reasons why it is being reintroduced now, I am not of course in the Pope's confidence, but I would guess there is a view in the Vatican that the Church lost more than it gained following the decision in the 1960s to celebrate the liturgy in the vernacular - in particular the international cohesion of the Church seems to have been eroded, and the sense that it is an international body with its centre at Rome. The Vatican basically has been losing its grip on the faithful.

It is also undeniable that the old "Tridentine" rite of the Mass was much more impressive than the vernacular rites which supplanted it. It is not just a question of the language used: the new Mass was not simply a straight tranlsation of the old rite, but was substantially altered at the same time, with lamentable results. There was clearly an agenda to "de-mystify" the ritual, presumably to make it seem more "approachable" but the end product was commonplace, banal and frankly ugly. It compares very poorly with the majesty, mystery and power of the ancient Tridentine rite, familiar from musical settings made by the great composers of Europe from Palestrina to Gounod (just as modern English translations of the Bible, while gaining in accuracy, nevertheless lose something of the power we feel in the magnificent prose of the King James version familiar from Handel's "Messiah").

The Vatican may feel that the falling off in Catholics' respect and awe of the Papacy may be in part at least a reflection of the substitution of this shoddy piece of work for the monumentally impressive Tridentine Mass.

Dr. Kreeft gives a summation of our Catholic Faith based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church that is filled with bite-sized morsels of truth and producing a veritable feast of faith!" The Courage to Be Catholic

The Courage to Be Catholic

Bestselling author George Weigel (Witness to Hope: A Biography of John Paul II) argues that the path to genuine Catholic reform does not lie in accommodating the truth to the spirit of the age, but in a renewed commitment to living the fullness of the Catholic faith. Weigel situates the current crisis of sexual abuse and episcopal malfeasance in the context of recent Catholic history. With unflinching honesty, he analyzes the Church's failure to embrace the great spiritual promise of Vatican II, resulting in the steady surrender to liberal culture. Weigel exposes the patterns of dissent entrenched in seminaries, among priests, and the bishops who failed their flocks. He then gives a solid agenda for true reform and holiness.
