WHY DON'T CATHOLICS ENCOURAGE THEIR MEMBERS TO READ THE BIBLE?
The way I feel, God gave the law and covenant, to give to the children of Israel for our knowledge, wisdom, and to learn the ways of him spiritually. And also we can appreciate the times we live in today are much more convenient compared to the way they were then.
I was a former member of the catholic religion when I would go with my family until I was 14. Then I realized that they don't have weekly bible studies, or they don't even suggest to the members they should read the bible.
Actually, Catholics read the Bible at daily Mass, where during the Liturgy of the Word, we read Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel scriptures. Most parishes, including mine, organize in-depth study of the scriptures. Catholics also run colleges and universities for top-notch scripture scholarship. Thus, you are operating from a false premise.
When you think about it, it would make no sense for the Church to discourage Catholics from reading the original Catholic documents, the New Testament scriptures.
The more interesting question is why Protestants authorize themselves to give imaginative interpretations to scriptures written and selected by Catholics in the original church. Indeed, careful readers of scripture will note that Jesus authorized Catholic leaders--first Peter and then the other disciples--to "bind and loose" in interpreting his teaching (see Matt 16:8, 18:8). Jesus told his disciples, soon to be bishops, "Whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."
If Jesus binds the Catholic leaders' interpretations, handed down over 20 centuries of consistent teaching, why do Protestants imagine they can loose what Jesus binds?
