Catholic Men
Have the Roman Catholic Men's Religious Orders who were discalced changed their Rule about wearing sandals?
Up until the 1960s or early 1970s,the friars both priests and brothers in the Roman Catholic men's orders who were discalced were required by the Rule of the Order to wear sandals on otherwise bare feet instead of shoes. Most friars did so whenever possible. For the last 2 decades this has no longer been the case and although some friars continue to wear sandals routinely, most no longer do so. Was the Rule of the Orders officially changed or is this an informal concept that it is now the friar's individual choice to wear or not wear sandals with the Habit?
I'm not sure. I have not heard this.
I go on the pro-life march in DC each year and many, many monks show up for this walk...most in sandals.

Treasury of Catholic Wisdom $27.95 The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom is a Catholic library in miniature, a one-volume microcosm of what the Church's great minds have thought and said since the apostolic age. Indeed, in The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom , noted theologian Fr. John A. Hardon has compiled the works of thirty-three of the greatest Catholic thinkers and writers, representing every period of the Church's passage through time, from the beginnings of Christianity to the present day. Here are men and women, bishops and priests, religious and the laity "whose native talents were elevated by the supernatural light that God reserves for those who are most submissive to His will." Included in this extraordinary and fascinating anthology are the works of the early saints, such as Gregory, Basil, Augustine, John Chrysostom, Patrick, Bernard Francis, and Thomas Aquinas. Here, too, are the writings of the great reformers Ignatius, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa of Avila; the mystic John of the Cross; the practical wisdom of Francis de Sales, Louis de Montfort, and Peter Julian Eymard; and the modern-day reflections of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Francis Thompson, Therese of Lisieux, G.K. Chesterton, and Fulton J. Sheen. The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom is a comprehensive anthology of the outstanding Catholic literature from the first century to modern times. Mystics and martyrs, philosophers and theologians, poets and prose writers are quoted at length and in depth. They are truly representative of the spirit and substance of Catholicism in its paradox of phenomenal stability and versatility over the centuries. Fr. Hardon has selected those writings which are representative of the thought and philosophy of each contributor, and has carefully chosen excerpts which are not always the most familiar. Thus, his volume provides not only a fresh collection of the best of Catholic wisdom, but also a uniquely comprehensive work which offers enlightenment and faith for generations of readers. John A. Hardon, S.J. , holds a master's degree in philosophy from Loyola University and a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He is the author of The Catholic Catechism and many other books. Fr. Hardon is also a founder of the Catholic Home Study Institute, a correspondence school which operates under pontifical approval. |

Classic Catholic Converts $14.95 Classic Catholic Converts presents the compelling stories of over 25 well-known converts to Catholicism from the 19th and 20th centuries. It tells of powerful testimonials to God's grace, men and women from all walks of life in Europe and America whose search for the fullness of truth led them to the Catholic Church. It is the witness of brilliant intellectuals, social workers, scientists, authors, film producers, clergy, businessmen, artists and others who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, studied and prayed their way into the Church. Fr. Charles Connor writes insightful and wonderfully readable stories of a rich variety of converts who struggled greatly with many challenges as they embraced Catholicism, including rejection by loved ones, persecution from strangers, and misunderstanding by peers. But, once they responded to God's call, they experienced great inner peace, contentment and joy. Among the famous converts whose stories are told here include John Henry Newman, Edith Stein, Jacques Maritain, Dorothy Day, G.K. Chesterton, Elizabeth Seton, Karl Stern, Ronald Knox and many more. "A great gift at a moment of history when conversions to the Catholic Church are receiving renewed attention. Marvelously readable stories highlight the vivid diversity of the personalities and the unity of the truth that still brings restless souls into full communion with the Church of Jesus Christ." "Rev. Richard John Neuhaus Editor, First Things "This fine parade of men and women, described with insight by Father Connor, shows how long is the reach of the Holy Spirit and how varied are the personalities He has gathered to Himself." "Rev. George W. Rutler Author , A Crisis of Saints "The touching conversion stories that Fr. Grodi President, The Coming Home Network "This book reminds 'cradle Catholics' of the pearl of great price that is ours and should motivate many of us to a sharper sense of evangelization as the new Millennium begins. Rich information and valuable insights abound-highly recommended!" "Most Reverend Edwin F. O'Brien Archbishop for the Military Services Fr. Charles Connor , a pastor of a parish in the diocese of Scranton, PA, is an expert in Church history. He is the host of several television series on EWTN including Historic Catholic Converts. |

New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 2 $14.95 'In this second volume of New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church are depicted the lives and deaths, the struggles and battles of those women and men who were raised to the honors of the altar by Pope John Paul II during the fours years from 1984 through 1987, in forty-nine beatification ceremonies and in seven canonization liturgies. ' Among them are Blesseds and Saints from a wide variety of countries, languages, ages and walks of life: lay people, religious, priests, and bishops, confessors and martyrs, including Edith Stein, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Titus Brandsma, Teresa of the Andes, and many more. All of them not only deserve reverence, but are worthy of imitation in their striving for perfection, in their fidelity to the Catholic faith and to the Church of Jesus Christ. ' The life of each one of these personages is portrayed briefly, occasionally in greater detail, followed by the homily which the Pope gave at the respective beatification or canonization ceremony. This papal address presents a very contemporary commentary on the life of the new Blessed or Saint. ' Anyone who reads these short biographies is edified and touched, moved to give thanks, that the Church, which today is so often reviled and criticized, is still in our days a ???Mother and teacher???, the Mother of Saints, and a guide to sanctity. Illustrated with many pictures .' 'Ferdinand Holb...ck, a German priest and renowned hagiographer, is the author of volume one in this series, and of Married Saints and Blesseds .' ' |
