Catholic Reluctantly
Catholics: Does this count as a divorce or was the marriage never valid in the first place?
I got married when I was very young, 18. My then fiance did not want to get married in the Catholic church because he thought it was too much ceremony. I reluctantly agreed, although I am a baptized Catholic, and we were married by a Unitarian pastor. There was no priest present at the ceremony. Two years later we were divorced.
I want to know if this marriage is seen as valid in the Catholic Church's eyes? I know that if you want a divorce in the Catholic Church it has be annulled. Would I have to go through the annulment process in this instance?
I just wanted to add a bit more info: at the time of the marriage I was not confirmed; my husband was a non-baptized non-Catholic; we did not get married in the Catholic Church; we did not get permission from the priest/bishop; there was no priest present at the ceremony; we did not have pre-marital counselling.
