The Catholic Women's Devotional Bible is designed specifically to nourish a woman's spirituality, making it easy to form a habit of daily prayer and reading. It includes a year's worth of meditations, drawn from classic and contemporary sources, all written by women... |
How do you, personally, view Mary in terms of your faith?
Putting aside, for the moment, the objections Protestants and others have to the status of Mary in the Catholic church and the place she has in our devotional lives (including the rosary and prayers, statues, all of that -- the points we all know are in contention):
Does the Mary of the Bible have any significance at all to you? Is she a worthy example to follow ("let it be done to me according to your word", "do whatever he tells you")? Or does she make an appearance at Christmas in the music and Nativity scenes and that's pretty much it -- a necessity for the Incarnation but hustled off the stage soon thereafter? How do you really feel about this blessed woman who brought Christ into the world?
I'd honestly like to get beyond the reactions to what Catholicism has made of her and discover the place (if any) the woman who bore the incarnate Word and was present at both Calvary and Pentecost has in the personal beliefs of non-Catholic Christians, and those of other faiths.
As a Muslim, I believe that Mary was a good, pure and chaste woman that God chose to bless her with the pregnancy of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). Jesus was born with a mother and without a father as Adam and Eve were born with neither.
I view Mary as a good and pious women who raised Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) to be one of the most influention prophets in the history of the world. I view her as a blessed women who will be blessed by God and given a place in Paradise.
We should all strive to emulate or imitate her in regards to piosness and kindness and faith, but by no means worship her.
That's how I view her.

Treasury of Catholic Wisdom $27.95 The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom is a Catholic library in miniature, a one-volume microcosm of what the Church's great minds have thought and said since the apostolic age. Indeed, in The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom , noted theologian Fr. John A. Hardon has compiled the works of thirty-three of the greatest Catholic thinkers and writers, representing every period of the Church's passage through time, from the beginnings of Christianity to the present day. Here are men and women, bishops and priests, religious and the laity "whose native talents were elevated by the supernatural light that God reserves for those who are most submissive to His will." Included in this extraordinary and fascinating anthology are the works of the early saints, such as Gregory, Basil, Augustine, John Chrysostom, Patrick, Bernard Francis, and Thomas Aquinas. Here, too, are the writings of the great reformers Ignatius, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa of Avila; the mystic John of the Cross; the practical wisdom of Francis de Sales, Louis de Montfort, and Peter Julian Eymard; and the modern-day reflections of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Francis Thompson, Therese of Lisieux, G.K. Chesterton, and Fulton J. Sheen. The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom is a comprehensive anthology of the outstanding Catholic literature from the first century to modern times. Mystics and martyrs, philosophers and theologians, poets and prose writers are quoted at length and in depth. They are truly representative of the spirit and substance of Catholicism in its paradox of phenomenal stability and versatility over the centuries. Fr. Hardon has selected those writings which are representative of the thought and philosophy of each contributor, and has carefully chosen excerpts which are not always the most familiar. Thus, his volume provides not only a fresh collection of the best of Catholic wisdom, but also a uniquely comprehensive work which offers enlightenment and faith for generations of readers. John A. Hardon, S.J. , holds a master's degree in philosophy from Loyola University and a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He is the author of The Catholic Catechism and many other books. Fr. Hardon is also a founder of the Catholic Home Study Institute, a correspondence school which operates under pontifical approval. |

New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 2 $14.95 'In this second volume of New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church are depicted the lives and deaths, the struggles and battles of those women and men who were raised to the honors of the altar by Pope John Paul II during the fours years from 1984 through 1987, in forty-nine beatification ceremonies and in seven canonization liturgies. ' Among them are Blesseds and Saints from a wide variety of countries, languages, ages and walks of life: lay people, religious, priests, and bishops, confessors and martyrs, including Edith Stein, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Titus Brandsma, Teresa of the Andes, and many more. All of them not only deserve reverence, but are worthy of imitation in their striving for perfection, in their fidelity to the Catholic faith and to the Church of Jesus Christ. ' The life of each one of these personages is portrayed briefly, occasionally in greater detail, followed by the homily which the Pope gave at the respective beatification or canonization ceremony. This papal address presents a very contemporary commentary on the life of the new Blessed or Saint. ' Anyone who reads these short biographies is edified and touched, moved to give thanks, that the Church, which today is so often reviled and criticized, is still in our days a ???Mother and teacher???, the Mother of Saints, and a guide to sanctity. Illustrated with many pictures .' 'Ferdinand Holb...ck, a German priest and renowned hagiographer, is the author of volume one in this series, and of Married Saints and Blesseds .' ' |

Catholic Christianity $17.95 For the first time in 400 years the Catholic Church has authorized an official universal catechism which instantly became an international best-seller, the Catechism of the Catholic Church . Using this official Catechism, the highly-regarded author and professor Peter Kreeft presents a complete compendium of all the major beliefs of Catholicism written in his readable and concise style. Since the Catechism of the Catholic Church was written for the express purpose of grounding and fostering catechisms based on it for local needs and ordinary readers, Kreeft does just that, offering a thorough summary of Catholic doctrine, morality, and worship in a popular format with less technical language. He presents a systematic, organic synthesis of the essential and fundamental Catholic teachings in the light of the Second Vatican Council and the whole of the Church's Tradition. This book is the most thorough, complete and popular catechetical summary of Catholic belief in print that is based on the universal Catechism. "In Catholic Christianity , Peter Kreeft has taken the core of the Catechism's teaching and has represented it in his pithy and winning style. The result is the best entree to the Catechism yet-and therefore the best entree to the Catholic faith." "Karl Keating Author, What Catholics Really Believe "Peter Kreeft's work is: 1) unfailingly brilliant 2) intellectually agile 3) astonishingly perspicacious 4) gloriously orthodox 5) Chestertonian-ly aphoristic. Buy and read this book, and be instructed and delighted." "Thomas Howard Author, On Being Catholic "As an apologist who speaks at many seminars and conferences across the country I am often asked what book I would recommend for an adult catechetics class. I always find myself recommending three our four books rather than one. No longer. This is the ONE book I've been looking for! Dr. Kreeft gives a summation of our Catholic Faith based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church that is filled with bite-sized morsels of truth and producing a veritable feast of faith!" "Tim Staples Radio Host and Apologist Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., a Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, is a regular contributor to several Catholic publications, and is the best-selling author of over 25 books including Prayer for Beginners, Back to Virtue, A Refutation of Moral Relativism, Heaven the Heart's Deepest Longing, and Fundamentals of the Faith .
