Catholic Youth Study Bible
Why is it so many Catholics have potty mouths?
I've hung around a lot of Christians from all kinds of denominations. I've gone on retreats with Lutherins, conferences with Methodists, overseas missions with Nazarene's, and I even married a Baptist.
By far and away the most vulgar of them all have been the Catholics.
Paul says in Ephesians 5:29 "No foul language should come out of your mouths..." Yet it seems Catholics have a dispensation to ignore this.
And I'm not talking about the C&E's either. We're talking about Eucharistic ministers, youth leaders, bible study teachers; I even had priests in college swearing in the classroom! What gives?
That is a very interesting question. I am a practicing Catholic, married since july, female, 35. And yes, I have a horrible potty mouth.
Like, really bad. I use the F word a lot. It's so versatile.
Honestly I don't know why. I am just being honest. My guess would be this; As a Catholic, we have the guilt thing going on. So many sins to avoid. So much pressure. I mean, we've got mortal sins, venial sins, a sin for every season and occasion. PLUS we've got our poor dead relatives and friends suffering in Purgatory and we are supposed to pray for them to get out. We have lots of rules and stuff and after all that we need some kind of outlet!
Enter potty-mouth and drinky-poo.
I'd like to speak for all Catholics by saying most of us do our best. We gotta avoid those BIG sins that send us to hell, so we indulge in some of the lesser sins, such as foul language, and drunkeness. It doesn't make us bad people. I suppose we should follow the rules more, but after all, we are only human.
Hope my perspective helps. God F*#!ing RULES!
