Question about teaching Bible as literature to my children.?
I want to teach the Bible as literature to my children as their reilgious education. BUT I don't want to brainwash them. I was raised a Catholic and I currently don't practice any religion though I have a strong personal spiritual belief. I feel that they will need a foundation in bible knowledge but I don't feel like I am a suitable teacher. What is the best way to do this. Will any one Christian sect understand my dilemma and help me w/o preaching what they believe is "right"?
It's actually a great idea to have your kids read the bible simply because a lot of the world’s greatest writings have been influenced by the book.
There is a ton of history and inside jokes in great literature that people don't get if they are not familiar with the bible.
That being said, I think if you don't want you kids to feel like they don't have to become a member of any Christian religion--a history class, or a religious studies class would work out really well when they are older.
So, maybe get a copy of the bible and put it on a shelf in your home library and tell the kids they can read whatever they want. You really can't make someone love to read, but you can let them have access to great books.
You could also go to the library, or the video rental place, and rent cool documentaries by Joseph Campbell, and other shows that are just meant to educate, and not to preach.
You could also make it a family thing to investigate different religions. If I ever have any kids, I hope to take them to all kinds of different temples and churches and synagogues--just to expose them to all of the different ideas there are about the world.
You can't force someone to be interested in this sort of thing, but you can encourage them to be free thinkers, who investigate things on their own terms.
