What is a good Bible for a beginning reader?
My six year old asked me for a Bible today. He has a children's story Bible, but he's informed me he's "way too old" for it now that he can read. He does read very well for his age, and his last reading assesment put him on a fourth grade level. I feel he's old enough for a "real" Bible, but I'd still like to find him something that is geared more towards younger children. It cannot be a story type of Bible, as he wants to mark verses in it. Can anybody recommend a Bible that would meet these needs? We're Catholic, so I'd like to have all the Catholic books in it. However, he'll spend most of his time in the NT anyway, so if I couldn't find one like that it'd be okay.
Yes, I'm aware the book stores carry books. I want to know if another Christian could recommend a certain Bible they've used that may be good for my son.
At his age and reading level, you can't get much better than the Catholic Children's Bible. I'd steer clear of even the simplified language conventional Bibles mentioned here, because they are 1) paraphrases, and 2) derived from the Protestant canon of Scripture rather than Catholic.
He can find sufficient challenge and content in the Catholic Children's Bible for now, and it sounds like in a couple of years he'll be more than ready for a "first communion Bible" with even fewer illustrations and more text.
