I have been reading buddhist wisdom and I identify with it. How do I go about practicing the religion?

I was raised Roman Catholic but I have not been practicing for years because I cannot relate to it.

I have been reading buddhist wisdom in random books, but what I was wondering is how to begin showing an actual faith in it.

Is there a holy book (the bible)
Do I have to convene someplace with other worshippers one or more days a week (attending church)
Are there any initiation I have to make to become a part of the religion (baptism)
Any common prayers I should know (The lord's prayer)
Are there daily rituals (prayer)
Do I need any props to practice it (alter)

Most of all : How do I decide which branch of the religion is right for me?

And any other info that you think may benefit me in knowing.

Thanks,

-Kelly

Right, the best place to start would be wikipedia, buddhanet.net, and religioustolerance....just google "buddhism" and those are the first 3 sites.

Some books would be buddhism for dummies...or you can go to this website http://www.buddhanet.net/books/main.htm to read some buddhist books for free online.

Depending on your area there may be some buddhist temples, but I doubt it. Also if there is make sure it's a temple that practices the branch you believe in.

As for which one to choose, read up on the different schools of thought. The two main ones are Theravada and Mahayana. I am a theravada buddhist. It's a lot easier in my opinion.

I do not believe there are any initiations in either of the 2 main schools. No prayers because in the fundamental buddhist beliefs there is no God. You can believe in one or many if you want to, but you don't have to.

No rituals I do nor an alter...I just try to live my life the best I can by following the 8 fold path and the 4 noble truths.

Prayers, Verses, and Devotions

Prayers, Verses, and Devotions

Introduction by Louis Bouyer A beautifully bound, Bible paper volume of Newman's most profound devotional writings. His meditations on the Litany of Loreto for the month of May, and on the Stations of the Cross are already recognized as classics of Catholic spirituality. And in his meditations on doctrine Newman shows that the source of true piety is sound teaching. His verses on various occasions are profoundly inspiring as are the spiritual hymns and canticles which distill the wisdom of the incomparable Newman. In addition, also included are the devotions of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes, translated by Newman himself and used by him as the primary source of his own spiritual life. Louis Bouyer, the greatest living Newman scholar, says of these: "Newman quite believed that in these exercises of Andrewes he had discovered that form of prayer which springs directly from the word of God and leads to a life fully lived in Christ. Not only as a priest, but later on as a cardinal of the Roman church, he would keep the Preces privatae on his kneeler for his daily preparation and thanksgiving before and after Mass and for his most personal meditations."

Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic

Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic

David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary. "David Currie has written what may turn out to be the work on this nettlesome topic of Evangelicals being received into the Catholic Church. With great charity and lucidity, he pursues every conceivable topic - biblical, ecclesiological, theological, and historical - that arises in the discussions on this matter." "Thomas Howard, Author, Evangelical is Not Enough "Currie has given us a work which is eminently intelligible, readable and personal. This book makes an especially happy marriage of the 'head' and the 'heart' in explaining the when, the why and the how of his pilgrimage. It should serve as a paradigm for the movement of 'Everyman' toward God and the Church His divine Son founded." "Rev. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, Editor, The Catholic Answer "Currie's book is a must read. Seldom is something so deep explained so clearly as Currie does in this wonderful work. Get it and get a copy for a friend." " Scott Hahn, Author, Rome Sweet Home ''

G. K. Chesterton was one of the most well-known and beloved writers of his time. Yet he has been strangely neglected today. This book is the perfect introduction to Chesterton. Ahlquist is an able guide who takes the reader through twelve of Chesterton's most important books as well as the famous Father Brown stories. But Ahlquist makes the literary giant accessible, highlighting Chesterton's amazing reach, keen insight, and marvelous wit. Each chapter is liberally spiced with Chesterton's striking quotations. There is something special that runs throughout Chesterton's books that sets him apart from the confusing philosophies of the modern world. That common thread in Chesterton's writings is common sense. It is instantly recognizable and utterly refreshing. ???Dale Ahlquist is one of the most respected Chesterton scholars in the world and there are few more qualified to illustrate the timeless wit and wisdom of the legendary GKC. This volume is an excellent introduction to one of the giant figures of the Catholic Literary Revival.???
