What are the pros and cons of the Jerusalem Bible?
I usually use the KJV, NKJV or ESV (and think these are excellent/reliable) for Bible study/Bible reading but I am wanting something a little lighter for just reading on the bus etc.
PS: Not interested in comments on whether the Bible is true or not.
and PPS: I'm wondering all of this in terms of whether its accurate, reliable and literal... not so much easy to read (per se).

Now, I will be describing the Jerusalem Bible, not the New Jerusalem Bible, and not the Koren Jerusalem Bible
Pros:
*contains the complete Roman Catholic biblical canon
*first English bible to use poetic formatting for verse
*translated *primarily* from original languages
*approved by the Roman Catholic Church for use in lectionaries in England, Wales and Australia
*transliterates the name of God
Cons
*relies in part on a French translation
*translated in 1966 - slightly dated
Other
*pre-dates use of inclusive language
Literalness: understand that, the more word-for-word literal a translation is, the *less* accurate it is likely to be. The JB is moderately literal (5.5), which in my experience is the "sweet spot"

We *should* expect a more accurate translation from the less literal end of the spectrum, but in fact a truly premier scholarly translation that is also very dynamic has not been produced.
The Jerusalem Bible is one of only two English bibles that have received Vatican approval for orthodoxy, so from that point of view the bible is one of the best available

OK, all of that aside.......
It sounds like what you want is an "easy-to-read" bible. I would say, for example, that the ESV is not much more difficult to read than the JB.
ESV - rated grade 8
NJB - rated grade 7.4
However, the flow is almost certainly better with the JB (I know that I really enjoy the NJB - in my opinion, the most accurate bible available).
What I recommend is that you peruse the New Jerusalem Bible online

The JB should be fairly similar (though the NJB was translated with a higher standard of scholarship). If this is not "easy enough" for your purpose, I recommend either the CEV or the NLT2. Both of these suffer in precision because of their use of simplified language, but the CEV appears to suffer *less* than does the very popular NLT2.
