How is the Eucharist symbolic?
The Bible teaches that Jesus is really, not just symbolically, present in the Eucharist (Matt. 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Cor. 10:16-17; 1 Cor. 11:23-29; and, most forcefully, John 6:32-71).
Several questions should be asked at this point: (1) Where else in the Bible is "spirit" ever interpreted as "symbolic"? (The answer: Nowhere.) (2) Since there's no other instance of "spirit" meaning "symbolic," by what criteria do Protestants insist on applying that meaning in John 6:63? (3) Since God, human souls, angels, and Satan are spirits, does that mean they too are merely symbolic--and if not, why interpret "spirit" in John 6:63 as meaning "symbolic"?
Ignatius of Antioch
"I have no taste for corruptible food nor for the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the seed of David; and for drink I desire his blood, which is love incorruptible" (Epistle to the Romans 7:3 [A.D. 110]).
(John.6:51-58)
This is one of the great discourses that non-Catholics are most keen to imply is not literal but figurative(that Jesus is speaking of His word and teaching only), and yet would have all believe that the entire Bible is literal,seems a little contradictive I think!
Jesus states to the crowd that `He is the Bread` come down from heaven and anyone who eats of `This Bread` will live forever``
Okay this opening phrase may indeed seem to be figurative I grant that, but as we read on what may appear as figurative soon becomes quite clear that this is literal indeed, Jesus then states;
`The Bread that I shall give........``Is `My FLESH` for the life of the world`` and shortly thereafter states,``I tell you `MOST SOLEMNLY` if you `DO NOT EAT` of the flesh of the Son of man and `DRINK his BLOOD`,
you `WILL NOT` have `LIFE` within you`` anyone who `DOES` eat My flesh and derink My blood has `ETERNAL LIFE` and I shall `RAISE HIM UP` on the last day``
The hypenated words here are so very very important,too important to simply dismiss as figurative, for what happens when Jesus states this awesome truth goes someway to explain why non-Catholics refuse to believe in the literal meaning and apply other self interpretations instead.
The Jews are scandalized at this and start arguing among themselves saying.`How! can this man give us his flesh to eat?(cannabalism it appears) and after this many of his disciples even walked away in disgust.
It should appear to be only logical that if Jesus was simply referring to His word and teaching, then He would not have allowed those who were already attracted to Him by His preaching to walk away in confusion, the logical thing would have been for Jesus to call them back saying, Look brothers I really did not mean my actual flesh and blood,come on now I was only speaking in figuratively,come on back and I will be more careful in how I choose My words in future! no this was not the case for all of this can only make proper logical sense if Jesus was indeed speaking literally about His flesh and blood.
For many non-Catholics the reading is never really examined and simply taken as read and so they really never see anything other than what they are accustomed to see, however there are many more who ignore and deny the meaning deliberatly, because to accept the literal truth here would in fact back up the Catholic claim of the Eucharist being the Body,Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, and this cannot be allowed to happen,it would conflict with the spirit of protesting!
The fact remains however that to gamble with this passage is to gamble with one`s eternal salvation and all believers should recieve the Eucharist at least once before they die believing it to be what Jesus stated it to be and witnessed to by the early church and ever since,The real presence, body and blood of Christ.
Jesus assures us of the literal fact of His body and blood,It is as Jesus said so "My Flesh is REAL FOOD and My BLOOD is REAL drink"(6:53)
St.Paul concurs with this real presence when he states,``Whoever eats the Bread or drinks the Cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the BODY and BLOOD of the Lord,examine yourselves and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup,for all who eat and drink without discerning the body eat and drink judgement against themselves, for this reason many of you are weak and ill,(here Paul records the words of Jesus,``Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood,you shall NOT have LIFE within you``), and some have died``.(1.Corinthians.11:27-31)
To apply all these verses to the argument that Jesus is only spiritually present actually profanes against these scriptures and against God given logic and wisdom,no where in scripture does it state that there is a penalty for failing to recognise the `spiritual presence` of Jesus, be it in or outside a prayer or service meeting,the penalty is obvious though whenever we apply the true meaning of the scriptures in the actual True presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.
