Which Hebrew/English Interlinear Talmud Should I Buy?

Hello!

I am a college student and I am beginning research on Hasidic Jewish spiritual texts and their interactions with faith communities.

I need to buy a Talmud that has both original Hebrew and English translations. Which kind should I buy, and how much can I expect it to cost?

Also, I am considering buying a Hebrew/English Interlinear Old Testament. I am used to using the (I'm Lutheran), but what translation of the Old Testament is commonly used in Orthodox communities?

Thank you for your help!

-Rebekah

The complete Talmud with interlinear English and Hebrew (sorry - that should have properly been Aramaic) will cost you a darned pretty penny. Thats like a wall of books!
I think the only one out is from Artscroll.

For an "old testament" -- as the other poster said - you don't want "old testament" you want Tanakh.
Artscroll has problems because its not meant as a scholarly work.
The JPS edition is best. I don't believe that they have interlinear but they have with facing pages.
And you should get something with lots of commentary including modern ones to put the medieval stuff in perspective and relation to what is done today.

But neither of these will get you to Hassidic thought.
They are general Judaism.

For starters on Hassidism (though these are "secular" scholars) you want Gershom Scholem and Martin Buber (Buber was actualy, I think, a religious Reform Jew - which may complicate the issue further).
What you will see is that there are broad divergences from the time of the Baal Shem Tov to today. There are currently a large number of Hassidic groups some of them philosophicaly "at war" with each other.
The most accessible group with alot of English source materials is the Lubavich (aka Chabad). Go to www.chabad.com for a mess of resources including online Hebrew-English bible text and books on Hassidic thought.
Their main work is "The Tanya" which is available in English but will make next to no sense to you if you read it on your own (serious mysticism stuff !!!)

Oh! There is a recent edition of a Torah with commentary done by the Lubavich ...well, you should be able to find everything at chabad.com

A prolific author who comes out of Chabad is rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. He has written his own translations with commentary on the Talmud and commentary on the Tanya. But he is not quite part of Chabad -- so I am not sure whether his thought represents Hassidism - academicaly speaking, I think at this point his group has become their own stream of Judaism.

Again - the serious problem with Chabad for purposes of studying Hassidism is that they developed very far away and are very very different from the other Hassidic groups.

If you watch the Israeli movie Ushpizin, this was made by Breslov Hassidim. You may be able to find some english work from them but it will be weird short pamphlets ...
Although !!! -- rabbi Nachman of Breslov was known for teaching his mystical wisdom through the use of fairytales. You should be able to find collections of his stories.
But again - the Breslover are also very non-representative of the "mainstream" of Hassidus.

Isn't there a class you are taking?
With a professor and recomended reading materials?
