Learn Bible Greek
If I learn Greek, can I study the Christian Bible better?
I'm thinking about just learning Greek so that I don't have to hear people twist stuff around and say, "Well, the way the Greek is set up, 'red' really means 'blue'" and so on.
So what kind of Greek do I learn, and how can I get my hands on Greek translations, so I can just read them for myself? If I learn Hebrew for the Old Testament, what kind should it be, and can I get my hands on a reliable Hebrew translation?
I know there are programs that will tell me about the Greek words, but that's not what I want. I just want to learn the languages and get this figured out once and for all, and without anyone having a chance to lie to me. Thanks.
I had to learn new testament Greek for my theology degree - it's not classical Greek (which is more difficult) and it's not the same as modern Greek either. Classical Greek is what literature was written in, but the ordinary people - like the NT writers - actually spoke and wrote something simpler. So for textbooks you really need something from a good Christian bookshop - which will also be able to sell you a Greek NT. It would have to be a shop that caters to theology students.
A halfway house which is more easily available is a Greek-English interlinear NT. This has the Greek NT with the exact translation of each word in English underneath. A NT Greek-English lexicon would be almost a necessity too - for some reason they aren't called dictionaries.
I never started on Hebrew!

Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: John Epistles and Revelation $9.95 This volume in the popular series of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible covers the three letters of St. John and the Book of Revelation (or Apocalypse). The three Johannine letters are explored first, with ample notes and reflections representing the best of contemporary and traditional scholarship and commentary. The largest portion of this volume is devoted to the Revelation to John, also called the Book of Revelation and the Apocalypse (from the Greek, meaning ???unveiling???). 'Written in highly symbolic style, the Revelation to John is perhaps the most difficult book of the Bible to understand. Scholars have long debated whether the book is concerned mainly with a symbolic depiction of the struggle of good against evil or whether it applies to specific events in history"its own time, the general course of Church history, or the end of the world. The annotations and commentary on this volume draw on the best elements from each approach, while emphasizing the biblical author's immediate intention: to recount the heavenly vision he received as it applied to his own time. Modern scholarship, as well as insights from the Church Fathers and other classic commentators, help the reader make sense of what many people regard as a confusing book. 'The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible includes Topical Essays, Word Studies and Charts. Each page features an easy-to-use Cross-Reference Section. Study Questions are provided for each biblical book, which can be used for personal or group study of the Word of God. Each biblical book includes an introductory essay covering questions of authorship, date, destination, structure and themes. Also included are outlines of each book. 'The text of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. |

The Greek Fathers $16.95 The Fathers of the Church were great, holy men of history who lived in the early centuries of Christianity and made a significant impact on the Church and society by their lives and their teachings & writings. There are various groups of such men considered to be Fathers of the Church, and this work focuses on the lives, adventures and central teachings of the great Greek Fathers, whose names are well-known in the history of the Church. 'The author covers seven Greek Fathers who lived between the years 293 to 754, most of them living in the 200-400's. These are St. Athanasius (293-373), St. Basil (330-379), St. Gregory Nazianzos (330-390), St. John Chrysostom (344-407), St. Cyril of Jerusalem (315-386), St. Cyril of Alexandria (+444) and St. John of Damascus (+754). 'This work gives popular sketches of these great saints, focusing more on their lives than on their theology, and is meant for the inspiration and illumination of the layman. These men are important, great figures of history to know about, men who were mighty patriarchs or famous bishops, who lead councils, resisted Caesar and suffered persecution for Christ. Their lives and dramatic witness stand out as a bright beacon of light for us all. |
