Life Application Bible
Is there anything wrong with writing in my Bible?
I have a wonderful 'Life Application Study Bible" Over the years I have highlighted scriptures, circled page numbers, and made short notes where I felt I needed. Last week in church, the little old man next to me saw what I have done. He was appalled and openly admonished me. What, if anything have I done wrong? Thanks in advance.
Some people consider bibles themselves to be holy. Therefore, from that perspective, marking or otherwise marring a bible - particularly the text itself, the word of God - is at the least disrespectful, and at the worst a form of defilement.
There is also the deeply-seated indoctrination some people have against marking in ANY book, one that probably originates from school or home or both. I received such indoctrination, but it didn't stick...though I still carefully consider before writing in a book.
I think this is a perfect example of a situation that is described by Paul

If you don't want to read the whole chapter, the nub is: when with a fellow Christian, don't do anything that offends that fellow Christian with regard to your faith.
In other words, either use an unmarked bible in church, or make certain that this person is not seated near you when using your marked bible. If you don't normally mark your bible in church, the simplest solution is to use an unmarked bible.
