Niv Bible Commentary
Bible commentaries for Proverbs and Isaiah and ???
I used Biblegateway.com every day, but the commentaries on certain chapters of the Bible are nearly none existent on there when connected to a verse, especially Proverbs and prophetical books like Isaiah, what are some good online Bible commentaries that really dig into what the "Word" means ? Also, I read the NIV, but being very literal, the Message version, read after reading the NIV usually makes more sense to me when I put them together, so that gives an insight into how I learn., I do not need opinions on the Message version, I've been a Jesus lover all my life, but now that I am retired and have time, I am delving deeper. I know the importance of various versions.
I have NIV study Bible with great footnotes and several sources, but often when I am on Biblegateway.com and I do NIV, then Message, then hit commentary, I am "into" studying the verse and Poof, no commentary
At Biblegateway, try the ESV, English Standard Version. Not only is it one of the best versions, but there are live links throughout all the verses that are very helpful.
Other than that, I'd suggest getting The Complete Jewish Bible for veracity in translation, idiom and culture.
Also, I'll attach some other translation sites that have multiple and sometimes very obscure and interesting versions and commentaries.

Translated by Fabian Larcher, O.P. St. Thomas Aquinas's biblical commentaries have been somewhat neglected. Similarly many readers of the Bible do not spend much time with the Colossians. This pearl of a Commentary should assist not only in renewing interest on Aquinas's exegetical insights, but also in deepening our appreciation for the richness of the Epistle to the Colossians.

The Bible and the Qur'an
$12.95
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, worldwide interest in Islam has reached an unprecedented peak. Thousands convert to Islam each year in the US alone, and sales of the Qur'an are very high. What do Christians need to know about the Qur'an? Fr. Jacques Jomier, O.P., has written a scholarly yet readable work that details the profound differences between Christian scripture and the Islamic sacred texts, differences that are too often glossed over by the mainstream media. Topics addressed include: Islamic teaching on Jesus and Mary; the universal mission of the Muslim; Jews, Christians and Islamic law. This book is a necessity for those who wish to understand the highly charged religious elements of the current conflict in the Middle East. ???Jomier carefully presents what the Qur'an teaches about the Hebrew and Christian bible. He contrasts the essential Muslim teachings with the Jewish and Christian understandings of themselves. Jomier is both sympathetic and critical. This is an excellent text in which to understand just what Islam means when it talks of Jewish or Christian sources in the light of its own traditions.??? "James Schall, S.J., Georgetown University Jacques Jomier, O.P. , served for many years as a missionary in the Middle East, gaining a unique inside view of the Muslim world. He was among the first to provide commentary on modern translations of the Qur'an, contributing greatly to the study of Islam. '
