Parallel Bibles Niv Message
What kind of bible should I get?
I'm thinking about a parallel bible with the niv/message translations, but I also want something with good notes in it... Help?
If you are looking for something with good notes, the ESV Study Bible is for you. It's got AMAZING footnotes on almost every verse, and the footnotes are good, not boring or confusing.
They also give great background on every book, and it was put together by real scholars, not some celebrity pastor.

The Message of St. Francis $17.95 This is a celebration of the life of St. Francis, great lover of God, man and 'nature. Extracts from his writings and from biographies of the saint are selected by Sister Nan, a member of the Community of St. Francis in London. Illustrated with stunning details and images from the fresco-cycle in the Basilica at Assisi, the book invites the reader to step into the world of St. Francis for a unique spiritual experience.' 'A legend in his own lifetime, Francis was canonized in 1226. Within two years of his death, work began on the great Basilica that bears his name. Two churches, one built on top of the other and set into the rocky hillside at Assisi, were decorated with some of the most important frescoes in Europe.' 'The 28 scenes from Francis' life are the treasure of the Upper Church. They speak to us of humanity, and deeply reflect Francis' capacity to bring Christianity closer to people.' 'On September 26, 1997, an earthquake struck Umbria, causing part of the Basilica to collapse. Miraculously, the fresco-cycle"part of the very fabric of the Church"although damaged, is for the moment still intact. This book illuminates defining moments from the life of Francis, and brings alive for a new generation of readers his message of peace, love and unity.' 'An introduction by Father Maximilian Mizzi, OFM Conv., Director of the Franciscan International Centre for Ecumenism and Inter-religious Dialogue in Assisi, is an inspiration to readers, whatever their faith.' ' Special Highlights: ' '--Inspiring texts are taken directly from writings of St. Francis or books about him. '--Glorious fresco illustrations from the Basilica in Assisi illuminate this book with 28 important scenes in the life of Francis. '--Insightful introduction to life and message of St. Francis by Fr. Maximilian Mizzi.' |

Saint Thorase of Lisieux: Her Family, Her God, Her Message $16.95 '" The greatest saint of modern times " said Pope Pius X back in 1914, speaking of St. Thorase of Lisieux. And, in 1997, Pope John Paul II declared Thorase a Doctor of the Church, citing the timeliness of her doctrine and the wisdom and practicality with which she grasped the Gospel message.' 'Why all this acclaim for Thorase, who was only a little middle-class girl from France at the end of the 19th century? The Centenary of her death, 1897-1997, was celebrated all over the globe. Why is Thorase so universally loved, invoked and imitated by people from all walks of life in every country in the world?' 'Fr. Bernard Bro, director of the French publishing house, ditions du Cerf, and a key figure in publishing the definitive editions of Thorase's writings, decided to set forth those aspects of her life, personality, and writing that do indeed mark Thorase of Lisieux as one of the truly great exponents of Catholic doctrine. What she offers in her life and in her writing, he claims, is "one of the most certain and simplest evangelical shortcuts ever proposed". What we find in her words is a "struggle between darkness and faith, humor and sadness, realism and pretense, maturity and childhood". The life, words, and texts of Thorase are of an astonishing freshness, accuracy, immediacy, strength, and genius.' 'According to Bro, Thorase does not flinch before the important questions everyone must face: Why death? How can we continue in hope when suffering and pain threaten to overwhelm us? How can we remain faithful-and joyful--when we are shaken by the circumstances of our life? And first of all, how are we to love? Thorase answered these questions both by her life and through her writing. Illustrated with many photos .' ' Fr. Bernard Bro , Dominican and doctor of philosophy, has been a professor at the Pontifical Faculties of Saulchoir, preacher at Notre-Dame in Paris, and recognized by the Academie Francaise for the whole of his work. He is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on the life and writings of St. Thorase.'' ' |
