What is a bible commentary?
I was wondering what a bible commentary is? I am new to the Christian faith and looking for a "personal" bible study that covers each book of the bible. I came across the new Warren Wiersbe bible commentaries that cover each book of the bible but didn't know exactly what a bible commentary was. I didn't know if you read your bible first then go to the commentary or if the commentary actually covers verse to verse. Thanks
Commentaries are "reference books" about the Bible.
A Bible commentary is a book in which the author attempts to explain and expand the meaning of the Bible. This can be by pointing to other scriptures on the same subject. It can be by showing how a prophesy in one book, such as the prophet Amos, is referring to a historical situation told about in 1 or 2 Kings. IT can give you their "opinion" on what a passage is talking about.
There are many good commentaries out there. They are written by people who have spent most of their lives studying and coming to understand the Bible. But none of them are perfect. They can be a go place to start learning, but do not rely on them as the "final word" on a subject.
A copy other books you may want to get is a "Bible Dictionary". It will help to explain terms, give bios of the people, history of cities and nations, usually will include a time line to help you understand since not all Bible books are in chronological order. As a "Topical Bible" is helpful. This is a reference book that list all the (major) verses on different subject. If you want to read on the verses, for example, on marriage or on forgiveness, they are listed together.
